THE LAST HOMELY HOUSE ※ RIVENDELL ※ LOG 2

THE LAST HOMELY HOUSE

OOC POST

The group is told to take a week of rest in the Last Homely House as the injured and sick among them heal. The Elves promise them that at the end of that week, there will be a great Council, with representatives of several peoples in attendance.

Until then, they can wander the peaceful halls of Rivendell, which are filled with travelers from all over the Wilderlands who are making a rest stop while they travel through the lands of Middle-Earth.

The most notable part of Rivendell is the Hall of Fire, a great feast hall where people can eat, drink, and be merry. This is the great social hall of Rivendell, where the Elves and their visitors share news of lands far beyond, tell stories, or perform music. The music here almost sounds divine, especially when the Elves sing and play, but they're just as eager to hear songs from other lands, so if any of the squad decide to share, they'll be glad to listen.

Some of the hall's guests are a touch more lively than the others, like a party of dwarves staying at Rivendell. Their stories are a mite more adventurous and if you get in their good graces, they might be willing to share some of the beer they brought with them. Listening to their stories or their talk about their craftmanship is a way to get into their good graces.

The Elves love learning, so there are libraries the group is allowed to browse, though they mostly only contain tales of Middle-Earth (for now), though the Elves seem to be collecting what books about other lands they can. These libraries often have viewing stations with telescopes pointing at the sky. The Elves have been almost delighted by the changing skies, enjoying the challenge of trying to understand how the sky has been knitting itself together with the addition of new worlds.

There are also beautiful balconies here, overlooking the gorge and the waters below, and terraced gardens filled with flowers, bushes, and flowering trees. Their rooms are open to the outdoors and have beds that seem grown into the shape of bed-frames instead of carved. The bathrooms actually have running water. The Elves have figured out how to direct the clean running waters of the gorge in primitive indoor plumbing. Water for hot baths has to be heated first in brass cauldrons over coal braziers before getting dumped into the bath.

It's time for the squad to rest, eat, and regroup. If a great Council is going to be called involving them, it might be a good idea to make sure they go into it as a united front, lest decisions about their fate be made for them.

NOTES

Joint log: Since this camp period won't be particularly long, everything will take place in a joint log. Players can post starters with prompts for others and tag into other players' prompts.

Post in actionspam format. Plots and mod-run events in the game are meant to be in actionspam format to keep a brisk pace.

Cursed Weapons/Powers: So they know about how they'll be treated: those with cursed weapons and dark powers will be tolerated by the Elves after entry. While they'll get the same general treatment, the Elves around them may at times seem uncomfortable. Those with cursed weapons will only be distrusted a little, as the weapons themselves will seem more suspicious than their bearers. Those with dark powers or some kind of dark nature (such as being a vampire, Necromancer mage, werewolf, etc.) will be treated with the greatest distrust.

Fairy Swaps: The Elves may be slightly alarmed by the Brugh fairy swaps but get over it easily. However, if the character swapped in is one of the "dark" characters, the swap might be extra cause for alarm. (A potential prompt idea).

Npcing: There will be two npc threads. The "Random Encounters" thread is for characters to have a totally random encounter with an npc. These npcs will be fellow travelers from lands beyond. While they can't give much information about the group's status as Chosen Ones (that will happen during the Council) they can provide info about events in the Wilderlands beyond that may come to affect the squad in their travels. The "Specific Requests" thread will be for more specific issues your character might want to discuss with the Elves. While they'll push any Chosen Ones discussion off to the Council, they're willing to discuss issues with the characters, like if they have questions about having received magic, about being bound to their weapons, etc. The Rivendell Elves have heard a lot of gossip from all over and can potentially provide info based on things they've heard.

Clothes: The group will not yet be fully equipped for their travels (that will happen upon leaving) but everyone will at least be given new clothes since theirs are dirty and sometimes torn. Characters without appropriate travel footwear will also be given light and sturdy boots that will somehow be in their size without their size being asked. They'll also be given basic toiletries like scissors that can be used to cut hair and beards. There are no razors, however, because the Elves don't need to shave so they don't keep them on hand.

DIXON | OTA

[personal profile] awfulcer 2018-06-02 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I. Hallway

[It's amazing what a shower, a bed and not having a giant knifewound in one's back can do for a mood. Dixon woke up this morning feeling alive for the first time in weeks, clean and in fresh clothes and with only the milder pain of a healing, stitched wound. He feels warm again, the biting cold of the morgul-splinter removed; God only knows the Elves did with it.

For the first time in a long time he's felt his head on right. He keeps taking deep breaths every few minutes, as if to just savor the moment, the serenity. Every once in a while he thanks God. He's never been especially religious, but he's been grasping around trying to make good on Chief's command to find love. Unable to scrounge it up anywhere else, he turns to the one love he knows to be as unconditional as his momma's. It's a phrase baked into his bones by the geography he was born into: Jesus loves you.

Currently, he's sitting on the floor in the hallway, sketching away on some of the paper the Elves gave them all. It's not high-quality art, but it's relaxing, and the pages start to fill up with badly-proportioned trees, elves and birds. A few squad members make it into the art too, although with such little resemblance to their actual personages that they could be forgiven for mistaking themselves for other people. Or for blobs.

Unfortunately, he's positioned in such a way that someone coming down the staircase could easily trip right over him. He hasn't been considerate enough about the needs of people on the second floor.
]

II. Hall of Fire

[For the first time since that endless fall that brought them here, Dixon feels like he's found his people. The main activity around supper has started to peter out, and that leaves the elves and dwarves who came to socialize and eat dessert and break into the store of dwarven beer. Dixon's rarely better (and rarely worse) than when he has a drink and company, and when he gets chatty he cozies up to the nearest table.

By luck, the table Dixon ended up at was full of Mirkwood elves and a group of dwarves (who don't seem to know to be offended when he refers to them as "midgets"), all of whom discussing the Elven musical performance that preceded. Dixon doesn't know any technical terms for music, but he does get enthusiastic in his appreciation for what he just heard, and one lubricated thing led to another slightly more lubricated thing.

Within half an hour, the table is singing together, a combination of Elven paeans, dwarven working songs and human classics like "Wayfaring Stranger" and "Joy to the World" (the fun one). It's the very definition of merriment. The dwarves get a little looser with their tap and the group starts to break into harmonies over "It Must Have Been Love", although it's just the chorus over and over as Dixon doesn't spend time teaching them the verses.

He can be caught between these rounds of song getting up and grabbing food or rounds of beer from the tuns for the table, grinning ear to ear, only a little tipsy, whistling in harmony with whatever dwarven song they're still singing at the table.
]

III. Balcony

[On the rare occasion that Dixon decides he's going to be any sort of productive, he's been trying to work out the magic of his shield. None of the elves seem keen to help him with it - they look at it as if he just brought in a handful of roadkill, something disgusting and possibly poisonous - but after running out of magic on the battlefield earlier, he figures it's best to understand its limits.

One of the things he's noticed (rather abruptly) is that the instant it leaves his hand he forgets how to use it. And that he can call it back to his hand if he throws it or leaves it somewhere. It'll zip around corners or fly to get back to him.

The combination of the two leaves him in the tricky position where he can call it, but he can't catch it. If it's built up any speed at all, it has a tendency to crash back into him, knocking him on his ass or rapping his knuckles or smashing into his face. He tries it about four times before realizing that that's the problem.

And then he tries it about a hundred more times trying to fix it, tossing the shield off the balcony, calling it back and making a vain and flailing attempt to keep control of it. It isn't a shield designed for throwing - the shape is all wrong - but he can still get fifty yards or so on it with the distance of the balcony. That sends it coming back pretty quickly, which he thinks he'll need to know.

It's way harder than catching a baseball. Figuring the healers will cover for him, he doesn't worry about the cut hands, bruised knuckles or black eye. He even finds it satisfying. Deserved, at least.

To his credit, he doesn't stop. That's about all that he can be given credit for, because he also doesn't seem to be improving. Every few minutes there's a "fuck!" or a "Jesus Christ!" or even the occasional "shit, I'm bleeding" somewhat audible from below the balcony.

Tell me something...

[Ange stops someone, looking at them with a somewhat haughty demeanor]

As you plainly can see, our group is barely holding itself together. If we were to be compared to clothing, we'd be more frayed and ruinous than the clothes we had before arriving here. We were caught off-guard by...a few malicious entities.

Are there factions or beings we should be aware of?

They say madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting there to be a different result, you know.

[Or...something like that. Ange isn't sure. She has been around, hearing the sounds of the shield being thrown and coming back to hit Dixon. She ignored it the first few dozen times, but after a while she can't just let it go without comment]

Are you trying to do something specific, or did you just decide a few bruises would complement the new clothes?

It hadn't sunk in until now: we really are in a different world.

[Kind of a stupid thing to say, some would think, but to her all these different people from Rivendell make very clear this is as far away from home as she can be. Elves...dwarves...it's amazing]

When you look at this place, you wouldn't think there's something wrong going on with the world. It's...it really is beautiful.

[ Arturia isn't always the most social of people. She tends more towards taciturn stillness than gregarious chatting, but when it comes to food she's enthusiastic, especially after the rather poor travelling fare that they've had to subsist on the last few days or weeks or however long it's been. Sometimes she loses track. After a bath and fresh clothes, she almost feels alive again. Here in the elf halls she finally has good food again and the change it makes to her demeanor when a new dish is brought out to try or a particularly tasty smelling platter is set on the table, she's happy and beaming or sometimes simply awestruck.

She devours huge quantities of the light, delicious Elven bread often spread with huge quantities of butter and honey. She drank moderately of the wine and mead the elves served but was much, much more interested in the food. At one of the meals (supper?), she leans over to one of her neighbors and points towards a platter further down that's covered in roasted meats and vegetables. ]

I have to know. What exactly is up with the wine-drinking bullfrog?

[ He's gotten a few side-eyes, though from that and from what he manages to overhear, it's hard to tell if they're more inclined to distrust his weapon or just appalled at a cursed weapon choosing such a young master.

Sothe doesn't particularly care, either way.

He keeps a low profile, most of the time - whether that seems to imply more "moody tweenager" or "shifty thief" probably depends on how favorably inclined you are (or aren't) towards him, but he doesn't seek out much from their hosts, and no matter how comfortable and safe the locale seems, he still always keeps one eye on the exit to wherever he happens to be.

The only luxury he seems to take to without reservation? The food. Kind of impressive how much he manages to put away, for being small as he is, really. ]

They haven't said anything about it themselves, which means they don't know what it means, or aren't offended by it. Or, at least, not as offended as the one he'd called a dark elf, who'd thankfully been just patient enough to let Hiccup explain himself.]

I'll try. Bear with me, I'm not much of a singer.

[As he starts to sing, it's clear he wasn't being modest. It's not the worst, but he has a slightly nasal voice and very little range.]

Neither am I. [Dixon doesn't even realize that 'sounds kind of nice singing' is one of his very few natural talents. He ushers Hiccup over to the table and hands out bread rolls to the many dwarves and elves looking to add some food to their stomachs after about three beers. And they settle in to listen.

What Hiccup lacks in musicality, the enthusiasm of the group compensates for. They let the unknown lyrics wash over them, but by the last "one before, long ago, ho!" the table is a cacophony of exuberant voices. One of the dwarves even wipes away a tear.

Dixon gestures for Hiccup to sit down next to him as the dwarves start to debate which mining song to sing next, one that is both iconic and entertaining enough for a table of buzzed elves and humans.

I know a happier one, the one my Dad used to propose to my mom? But it's not really associated with happy memories for me right now.

[By contrast, Dixon generally helps himself to the food that's available, under the theory that if they didn't want him to take it they'd have told him ahead of time. He's raiding the pantry for snacks when he almost trips over Sothe, as sneaky as the kid is. The dinner rolls he's packing away go spilling out of his arms]

Hey, you-

[But then he sees who it is, and there's a chill that sets over him. What with his network meltdown, Sothe's elusiveness, and Dixon's injury, he hasn't gotten a chance to catch up with the kid he barely dragged off the battlefield. He hasn't even gotten any information about Sothe's state except that he's alive. There's a way that the very concept of Sothe sets a stone in Dixon's stomach, flashes his brain back to crying into Sothe's hair in complete despair, trying to keep the kid awake and only registering the failure.]

Family troubles? [Dixon doesn't have any personal experience with that particular flavor. There have been troubles in his family, but never really between his parents.] It's alright, lots of people have bad relationships with their parents.

[After being pulled from his peaceful home and dumped into the middle of tension-filled chaos, finally there's a chance for him to breathe. Which Hanbei will take gladly over being ushered along with no sense of what was going on- short of needing to assist these others in their endeavor to save the "Green".

Once he's clear to roam about on his own after being looked over (how thoughtful of these elves), the young man keeps his small companion extra close. The view from many of the balconies are certainly sights to behold though.]

Mm. I can't say I haven't been this kind of far away from home before.

[Hanbei pauses as if it's only to let the mouse respond back in the only way that Pokemon do, but then he turns- the comment apparently just for whoever happens to be approaching.]

So who am I required to find for a few more answers about this quest we've been recruited into?

B - Light Screen

[Never the sort to overexert himself, Hanbei will nonetheless be curious over the dea that he was one of those being given something to be more of use to the group than just a strategist and relying on his Pikachu to make up for what he otherwise lacks combat-wise.

... Magic aside from what can make various Pokemon so fantastical is is an easy task it seems. Sparkles of something manifest at his fingertips if Hanbei tries hard enough at his current understanding, but that's all. So he's found a place to somewhat recline and closes his eyes in thought.

This really isn't an attempt at a nap this time, but plenty of people are capable of finding ways to fall asleep while meditating for an epiphany.]

[Luckily for everyone involved Kal was paying enough attention that he doesn’t quite trip, but only because he stops himself in time. He looks… much better than he did after the battle, but not having Dementors and his own clone playing tug of war with his soul probably helps a lot with that. Not to mention being able to rest up in an actual bed, and the food.

He’s actually munching on something right now. Elven bread is amazing, let him tell you.]

1; Library

[Of course Kal was going to visit the library first of all. Anyone who’s gotten to know him shouldn’t be surprised in the slightest. He showers first, of course, and there are some wounds to be tended to. But all in all he got off lucky so as soon as he’s sure his wounds aren’t going to be infected he makes a beeline towards the library.

He’s sitting down surrounded by books, apparently reading three at once and he seems to be… taking notes. He’s got some papers scattered around as well, and while he really (really) misses ballpoint pens and his trusty notebook he’s making do with what he’s done. All his writing shorthand, though- old habits die hard and all that.

Kal looks up as soon as he notices someone else entering the library.]

Sorry, I… made a bit of a mess, didn’t I?

2; Hall of Fire

[Okay, now that he isn’t basically an autotroph being anymore (thanks, sun) he does get hungry eventually. So he can be seen just filling his plate with what is, frankly, a lot of food. He’s been hungry for a while by now and it’s not a feeling he’s used to, okay? It’s going to take a few tries for him to learn how much he can actually eat. That’s going to be his excuse and he’s sticking to it.

But, if anyone’s paying attention to him they may notice he’s actually… slowly but surely filling backpacks with whatever good seems like it will hold up for a long time. They aren’t going to be spending forever in this place, after all, and Kal can’t stop thinking about the kids that are travelling with them. About his own son. He’s not going to allow any of them to go hungry, wherever they may go next.

But he’s still going to be looking a little sheepish if he notices anyone caught him red handed.]

3; Hall of Fire - with the Dwarves

[Eventually he makes his way to the end of the table with the happy, boastful dwarves and he seems to be having… a pretty good time, actually. He’s taking notes (again), trying to record their stories to see if he can find any similarities between what they are telling him and what he’s found in the books, which seems to have put the Dwarves in a good mood.

And Kal’s not going to say no to good beer.]

[They both look like better versions of themselves than they did a few days ago, as if they were dirty dishes that someone finally ran through a washer, wicking away all the grime and leaving them sparkling. Dixon's transformation is almost jarring; the instant he feels unwell he usually lets all his effort to stay presentable fall away, and that was his state before getting to Rivendell. Now it actually looks like he tried to arrange his hair into something presentable and shaved.

He's still got a bit of the hero-worship impulse with Kal, but the events at Weathertop leveled things down some. Sometimes idolization doesn't hold up well to exposure; Kal's just another member of the group, as fallible as the rest of them, not about to swoop in and save the day for everyone. And that's fine. At least that'll leave Dixon a little less tongue-tied.

There's a bit of a beat where Dixon isn't quite sure whether to lay claim to the drawings - it isn't that he's proud of them, it's just a thing to do to pass the time - but there's no point in lying.
]

Yeah. The Elves gave us a bunch of paper, if you want to join in. [Dixon figures Kal's probably got super-drawing skills and could churn out a Michelangelo in five seconds flat, but hey, Dixon's ego isn't going to take a beating if someone's better at sketching trees than he is.]
