[To Ange, the events at Weathertop were both a fiasco and a wake-up call. It's not like she had an idyllic image of how the quest would go or anything like that, but she hadn't realized how much trouble she'd be in. Guts and luck will only take you so far and she knows it. That's why she has taken the decision to try to get a handle on those so-called alchemy skills she now has. She has no idea how they'll be useful, but she has to try. The L-Space books seem like the best chance. Ange is sitting there, with a pile of books and browing them with attention] 

Is this what my grandfather used to study...? 

[For a moment she can imagine her grandfather reciting that strange language, and trying to craft a spell. Better start working. Spell-weaving is a concept that gets her attention. Using the magic of her companions she may be able to do something truly powerful. She'd have to find out what others can do, first. She's trying to decide what to focus on first, if going deeper into weaving or into crafting. When someone comes nearby, she asks them:] 

Do you have any magic spells?

They're going to be on the road at some point, so they better be prepared. Carrying a bag of water over her shoulder to Weathertop left her sore, not because of lack of strength, but because of how uncomfortable that was. To try to make it easier to carry provisions, she got a messenger back from Ross, and is now looking through Wawa to find the few water bottles that aren't expired yet] 

Do you usually have trouble getting supplies along the way? 

[She's trying to judge how much to carry and how much space she should leave available. Better have some foresight, after all!].

In other words, we're going to improvise at some point no matter what. That may not go well -- nobody can expect someone like me who hasn't spent not even a day in the wilderness before arriving here to know what to do in some situations.

[Common sense only takes you so far, and although Ange has a lot of common sense, she lacks experience. That's where she's going to have trouble. Not planning to be deterred by her inexperience, she takes a couple bottles of water and slings the bag over her shoulder, looking around to see if there was anything else that could be of use]

...plastic? Pretty common thing, it's everywhere...except in your world, apparently. What kind of place is your home?

The 11th Century has been a fairly good answer so far. So has "I'm a Viking."

[Being clad in extremely well-made leather armor had also helped people peg him as being pre-plastic. Or possibly a LARPer, but nobody had made that assumption yet.]

Good thing about being in a group is that there's enough different so that nobody has to know how to do everything. You're going to need to learn how to survive in the wilderness eventually, but there's a safety net here until you do.

...that explains a lot. It may be for the better we're not in a functional modern city. I had never met someone from the past, but I imagine it would have been difficult to try to get used to modern concepts like...plastic.

[There has to be a word for that. Culture shock? Maybe not. At least with a broken and abandoned city like this one you're not surrounded and overwhelmed by a lot of modern things]

I'll learn. Adaptability is something I consider myself good at.
