THE LAST HOMELY HOUSE ※ RIVENDELL ※ LOG 2

THE LAST HOMELY HOUSE

OOC POST

The group is told to take a week of rest in the Last Homely House as the injured and sick among them heal. The Elves promise them that at the end of that week, there will be a great Council, with representatives of several peoples in attendance.

Until then, they can wander the peaceful halls of Rivendell, which are filled with travelers from all over the Wilderlands who are making a rest stop while they travel through the lands of Middle-Earth.

The most notable part of Rivendell is the Hall of Fire, a great feast hall where people can eat, drink, and be merry. This is the great social hall of Rivendell, where the Elves and their visitors share news of lands far beyond, tell stories, or perform music. The music here almost sounds divine, especially when the Elves sing and play, but they're just as eager to hear songs from other lands, so if any of the squad decide to share, they'll be glad to listen.

Some of the hall's guests are a touch more lively than the others, like a party of dwarves staying at Rivendell. Their stories are a mite more adventurous and if you get in their good graces, they might be willing to share some of the beer they brought with them. Listening to their stories or their talk about their craftmanship is a way to get into their good graces.

The Elves love learning, so there are libraries the group is allowed to browse, though they mostly only contain tales of Middle-Earth (for now), though the Elves seem to be collecting what books about other lands they can. These libraries often have viewing stations with telescopes pointing at the sky. The Elves have been almost delighted by the changing skies, enjoying the challenge of trying to understand how the sky has been knitting itself together with the addition of new worlds.

There are also beautiful balconies here, overlooking the gorge and the waters below, and terraced gardens filled with flowers, bushes, and flowering trees. Their rooms are open to the outdoors and have beds that seem grown into the shape of bed-frames instead of carved. The bathrooms actually have running water. The Elves have figured out how to direct the clean running waters of the gorge in primitive indoor plumbing. Water for hot baths has to be heated first in brass cauldrons over coal braziers before getting dumped into the bath.

It's time for the squad to rest, eat, and regroup. If a great Council is going to be called involving them, it might be a good idea to make sure they go into it as a united front, lest decisions about their fate be made for them.

NOTES

Joint log: Since this camp period won't be particularly long, everything will take place in a joint log. Players can post starters with prompts for others and tag into other players' prompts.

Post in actionspam format. Plots and mod-run events in the game are meant to be in actionspam format to keep a brisk pace.

Cursed Weapons/Powers: So they know about how they'll be treated: those with cursed weapons and dark powers will be tolerated by the Elves after entry. While they'll get the same general treatment, the Elves around them may at times seem uncomfortable. Those with cursed weapons will only be distrusted a little, as the weapons themselves will seem more suspicious than their bearers. Those with dark powers or some kind of dark nature (such as being a vampire, Necromancer mage, werewolf, etc.) will be treated with the greatest distrust.

Fairy Swaps: The Elves may be slightly alarmed by the Brugh fairy swaps but get over it easily. However, if the character swapped in is one of the "dark" characters, the swap might be extra cause for alarm. (A potential prompt idea).

Npcing: There will be two npc threads. The "Random Encounters" thread is for characters to have a totally random encounter with an npc. These npcs will be fellow travelers from lands beyond. While they can't give much information about the group's status as Chosen Ones (that will happen during the Council) they can provide info about events in the Wilderlands beyond that may come to affect the squad in their travels. The "Specific Requests" thread will be for more specific issues your character might want to discuss with the Elves. While they'll push any Chosen Ones discussion off to the Council, they're willing to discuss issues with the characters, like if they have questions about having received magic, about being bound to their weapons, etc. The Rivendell Elves have heard a lot of gossip from all over and can potentially provide info based on things they've heard.

Clothes: The group will not yet be fully equipped for their travels (that will happen upon leaving) but everyone will at least be given new clothes since theirs are dirty and sometimes torn. Characters without appropriate travel footwear will also be given light and sturdy boots that will somehow be in their size without their size being asked. They'll also be given basic toiletries like scissors that can be used to cut hair and beards. There are no razors, however, because the Elves don't need to shave so they don't keep them on hand.

[Revan folds her arms and settles her weight back on one leg to watch. It'll be useful to know how her comrades in arms fight. Besides, he moves like he knows what he's doing, and it's always a pleasure to watch someone in command of their art.]

It's a Jedi style.

[Some people have recognized the term, so she tries that first before diving into an explanation.]

[personal profile] theincredibleherc 2018-06-05 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Herc's eyes flicker in surprise, but only slightly. He moves through the rest of the form without saying anything, finishing by slamming a fist into the ground hard enough to shake a nearby table.]

Jedi I'm familiar with only in fiction. But I am familiar.

[Sticking out his hand, he flashes a huge grin.]

I am Hercules, God of Strength and Labors. Who do I have the pleasure of addressing?

[personal profile] greyerrant 2018-06-05 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Not everyone's a soldier, or lived on the street for a time. Or both, as in my case.

[ He grins a little. ]

greyerrant: (Looking down.)

[personal profile] greyerrant 2018-06-05 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
If you are tired and unable to walk any further, I'll carry you. That's what an Astartes is for, after all.

[ He shrugs. ]

You seem to conflict with a lot of our compatriots. Why?
reluctantgenius: (lightbulb)

[personal profile] reluctantgenius 2018-06-05 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly that!

[For a moment Hanbei lets the minor joke sink in, but he's certainly not going to leave the explanation to such a brief answer.]

More seriously, Pikachu is one of many different species of Pokemon. Which in general are creatures that come in many forms and with a wide variety of rather fantastical powers... such the ability to shoot lightning bolts.

[... A tiny and cute little mouse creature with the powers of Thor at their disposal?]

[Watching the sky is habit for Phos. Danger, in their experience, has usually come from above.

So when wandering outside a bit, soaking up a bit of extra light after too much time poking around the strange interiors of the huilding, they spot the shield flying off the edge of a balcony above almost immediately. For a moment they just squint at it, perplexed and growing only more perplexed as it lands a distance away and then swoops back through the air on its own up to the balcony again. The distant but just audible cursing that follows is even more confusing.

And then it happens again, and after a third time they decide to investigate. Their gold alloy ripples out from beneath their heels into a shifting pillar, lifting them neatly up to the next level. Cautiously, they pause when just high enough to peer over the edge of the balcony's floor, watching this bizarre scene from between the bases of two of the railing balusters.

...Yeah. They can't make any more sense of it even actually seeing what's going on up here.

After another minute or so of watching, bemused, Phos lifts themself up a bit further to peek over the balcony railing, staying low in case Dixon was about to throw the thing again. They'd really rather not get brained by that thing when they're not sure anyone here could put them back together.]

Why are trying to get rid of it? That's a waste of a weapon.

[And it doesn't look like it's working either, since the shield keeps zooming right back to him. Why it's to attached to Dixon in particular, of all people, Phos really couldn't say.]

Yes. Or...people who won't be missed in their worlds.

[Ange's seriously considering that may be the case, at least for herself]

[As response, Ange simply pulls the corners of her mouth upwards with two fingers, the rest of her expression perfectly deadpan. Pretty lousy smile, really]

[Dixon gives Loken a bit of an offended look.] Let me have my pride, at least. I don't need you carrying me around like a baby.

[And then he just shakes his head and pulls his sketching papers close, going back to work on that tree he was blobbing out.]

I didn't start it. Both times they started it. [He knows relitigating it isn't going to help, but he just wants to make sure it's clear that that's his side of the story.] I just got a problem with going off sometimes.
invisibleheir: (Hmm)

I'm not used to throwing such things. May I?

[ She watches him for a moment, frowning as his stance just completely changes as soon as the weapon leaves his hand. SOme kind of enchantment. She reaches out to try and adjust his stance a little. ]

Shoulders back, don't slouch. Feet further apart. Try not to let it come directly at you--step sideways a little that you catch it across your body instead of letting it hit you in the chest. Or worse, the nose.

[ She pauses. ]

Wait. Throw rocks?

Practicing. [He gives Alacruun a look, like what does it look like he's doing? He's clearly not just trying the same thing over and over with limited success.]

I'm figuring out how this shield works. Problem is as soon as I let it go I forget how to use it. [He sounds a little embarrassed by that.] But I can still call it back to me, and it'd be nice to know how to catch it if was in a fight and needed it.

That don't sound condescending at all. [Dixon harrumphs, then coughs that 'I'm-quitting-smoking-and-my-lungs-don't-know-what's-happening' cough into his elbow.]

Then again, I don't have to like you to try to save your ass if it happens. I don't want someone like you having to hold someone down so someone like Sothe can cut his throat out.

[Ange doesn't seem apologetic at all about her condescending remark, at least until Dixon keeps talking. Then she does feel some guilt. That's...that's not necessary, she wants to say. She doesn't need someone to 'keep her safe'. She'll be okay...maybe.

Still, she can't bring herself to say that. Maybe she does want to 'be kept safe', if only because she doesn't remember the last time someone did intend to do that. Virtually everyone who said they'd help her betrayed her later, and the one person that genuinely meant it was someone Ange rejected in a bout of grief.

Can she trust Dixon? She can't. She doesn't trust anyone here not even a little bit. But...it's still nice that someone's taking the time to look after her when there's trouble]

Ah, it's useless, it's all useless.

[She only says that to fill the silence while she chews on a nail, thinking. Finally, Ange replies:]

Fine. You do whatever you want. But...it'd be unfair if I don't try to return the favor someday. You'll see.

[Yeah, she intends to reciprocate. She doesn't really like Dixon either right now, but she definitely's going to try to help him back. Just out of gratitude, at the very least]

[ Warm, thick leggings, a long tunic, good socks, and a woven belt are nice, but not nearly as exciting to Tim as the boots . Tall and supple, they’re almost as good as his boots at home. Begrudgingly, he has to admit that they’re better in terms of silent stealth, but he doesn’t think anyone who isn’t blessed with super-hearing or an obsessive nature would notice the improvement.

He also has a cloak, because he wanted to get used to the weight of a new material before they continued on from Rivendell.

Or that’s how he spun it for the elves. The truth is Tim wasn’t leaving Rivendell without a grey-green elven cloak, because he was a predictable nerd and because he left his cape without his other pajamas.

The cloak is lighter than his previous leather one, which was hot and cumbersome. Tim is getting accustomed to the way it moves and the feel of the boots, as well as the feel of surfaces, rocks, and edges through the soles by climbing up the side of the gorge back to one of the largest balconies.

Back, because he already climbed down.

It’s not as risky as it sounds. He’s wearing two belts, and the second has a grappling hook.

[Revan's had variants of this conversation often enough to take it in stride, so she accepts Herc's hand without commenting on her metaphysical state with respect to his universe.]

Revan, of the Jedi Order.

[No hint that she recognizes the name "Hercules," or that she's more than politely curious about the alleged godhood, but her smile, if not as wide as his, is at least genuine.]

Nice to meet you, Hercules.
therevanchist: (•027)

[personal profile] therevanchist 2018-06-06 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's the case.

[Revan was kind of in the middle of something of galactic importance when she got interrupted, but the fact that Ange suggested it might mean she thinks that about herself.]

What's your name?

[Distraction time.]
wherenoonegoes: (Hiccup what the hell)

[personal profile] wherenoonegoes 2018-06-06 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
[Something about the joke didn't entirely sit right with Hiccup.]

Hang on, I just want to clear something up. Is Pikachu their name and the name of the species?

[That shocked Hiccup more than Pikachu's electrical powers. Animals that shot lightning weren't new for him. It wasn't a common ability among dragons, but Hiccup could name at least three species off the top of his head that could do it.]

[He jumps a little when Phos pops up, not because he isn't aware someone could come in on him but because he didn't realize it would come from the ground floor. And as he's a person who can't hide emotions when he tries and really doesn't hide them when he doesn't, the disdain and disgust shows all over his face when he sees who it is.

The idea that he could just throw it at Phos does occur to him, but to Dixon's credit, he doesn't even hold onto that thought that long. Or at least too long.

He doesn't even have the clearest recollection why he doesn't like Phos so much. His antipathy is based more on his version of the official story (that basically starts and ends with "he started it") than actual memory of what happened when he was drunk the first time they all got together, or disoriented when they first arrived. But for hell's sake, he thought he was free of this kid, that this kid got thrown into the mirror network never to return except to heckle when they're all discussing shit.
]

I'm not trying to get rid of it. I'm trying to get better at bringing it back.

[This time he just drops it off the edge of the balcony, waits until he hears it hit the ground, and then whistles. The shield comes zooming up and he dodges aside an instant before it goes crashing up into the ceiling. It drops to the ground and then scoots, almost abashedly, over to rest of his foot.]

Unless you got one of these magic weapons I wouldn't expect you to know anything useful about it.
wherenoonegoes: (Hiccup hmm)

[personal profile] wherenoonegoes 2018-06-06 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Hiccup winces at the mention of what happened to Dixon's chief.] And I basically used him against you. Great. Good going Hiccup.

He sips at his own beer, and scratches Toothless's earflaps.]

What was he like, anyways? I basically know nothing about what your home is like.
reluctantgenius: (bored)

[personal profile] reluctantgenius 2018-06-06 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I am indeed referring to my partner by his species rather than a nickname.

[And though Hanbei might seem alarmingly impersonal about his small friend, he doesn't hesitate in giving the Pikachu what appears to be a loving enough pat on the head. And the average person wouldn't call a pet their "partner", right? How confusing.]

However there aren't many warriors I know of that do. But the Pokemon themselves don't mind it.
awfulcer: (Basic - Harvey Dent Drinks Alone)

[personal profile] awfulcer 2018-06-06 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
It worked, though, didn't it? [Dixon says that more to himself than to Hiccup, and he takes a morose sip from his beer.]

I'm pretty sure most of what I know about your place is from...I don't know. Credit card commercials. Capital One. [Didn't they have a Viking one? He takes a breath.]

He was a good man. Taught us all how to act right, gave us someone we wanted to be. Chief of- [Dixon almost says 'police' but he isn't ready to admit that whole story, that he was police and fucked it up in a way Chief Willoughby never would have approved of and got fired.] -he was basically the guy who took care of the whole town. All of us. [Except the black people, you know.]

Probably like your dad.
shipoftheseus: (suck it)

[personal profile] shipoftheseus 2018-06-06 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Phos makes a face right back. It's not like Dixon's given them any reason to be nice, after all. Bortz might be a lunatic asshole sometimes -- most of the time, really -- but at least they're reliable and strong and probably do mean well under all that attitude. Dixon doesn't have nearly so much going for him.

Lifting themself a bit higher, they catch the railing and step up onto the outer edge of the balcony so they can lean lazily over it, the alloy reverting back up inside them aside from the heel protrusions. They arch a crystalline eyebrow, unimpressed.]

Yeah, your method looks really "useful".

[The sarcasm is strong. And to be fair, it looks like Dixon's making more progress in damaging himself than in mastering this particular technique.

Reaching out with a hand, the alloy of their arm stretches and extends across the balcony in a golden tendril that darts out, catches the edge of the shield at Dixon's foot and quickly yanks it away. The alloy shrinks back again until they can hold the shield with two now ordinary-shaped arms, lifting it a little in slightly smug demonstration.]

But it doesn't try to break me when I do it my way.

[It doesn't feel natural, the way she adjusts his stance. His body, like his mind, has always taken the path of least resistance, cutting corners where it can. To stand up straight and root his feet is like trying to slip into another person's body.

He hands the shield over to her to inspect, quietly hoping she won't look too hard at the spidery, light engravings on it. They don't say "police department", but all the imagery is there.
]

Yeah. I can pitch pretty hard and it's kind of like a ranged weapon. You should have seen me bean that one goth jackass in the face.

You... forget. As soon as you let go of it.

[ Alacruun sounds puzzled and he gives Dixon a very long look. He's been aware of the man for a while, but he hasn't spoken to him much. Too busy trying to make himself comfortable in this wretched place. ]

That sounds like some sort of enchantment.

[ Another pause. ]

Have you considered not dropping it?

A ship in the sky. I've heard of such things, but never seen it.

[ He glances up at the stars, almost as if he half-expects to see the dang thing, but his tone his light enough to indicate that he's playing along. ]

We're rather far from home, unfortunately.
