THE LAST HOMELY HOUSE ※ RIVENDELL ※ LOG 2

THE LAST HOMELY HOUSE

OOC POST

The group is told to take a week of rest in the Last Homely House as the injured and sick among them heal. The Elves promise them that at the end of that week, there will be a great Council, with representatives of several peoples in attendance.

Until then, they can wander the peaceful halls of Rivendell, which are filled with travelers from all over the Wilderlands who are making a rest stop while they travel through the lands of Middle-Earth.

The most notable part of Rivendell is the Hall of Fire, a great feast hall where people can eat, drink, and be merry. This is the great social hall of Rivendell, where the Elves and their visitors share news of lands far beyond, tell stories, or perform music. The music here almost sounds divine, especially when the Elves sing and play, but they're just as eager to hear songs from other lands, so if any of the squad decide to share, they'll be glad to listen.

Some of the hall's guests are a touch more lively than the others, like a party of dwarves staying at Rivendell. Their stories are a mite more adventurous and if you get in their good graces, they might be willing to share some of the beer they brought with them. Listening to their stories or their talk about their craftmanship is a way to get into their good graces.

The Elves love learning, so there are libraries the group is allowed to browse, though they mostly only contain tales of Middle-Earth (for now), though the Elves seem to be collecting what books about other lands they can. These libraries often have viewing stations with telescopes pointing at the sky. The Elves have been almost delighted by the changing skies, enjoying the challenge of trying to understand how the sky has been knitting itself together with the addition of new worlds.

There are also beautiful balconies here, overlooking the gorge and the waters below, and terraced gardens filled with flowers, bushes, and flowering trees. Their rooms are open to the outdoors and have beds that seem grown into the shape of bed-frames instead of carved. The bathrooms actually have running water. The Elves have figured out how to direct the clean running waters of the gorge in primitive indoor plumbing. Water for hot baths has to be heated first in brass cauldrons over coal braziers before getting dumped into the bath.

It's time for the squad to rest, eat, and regroup. If a great Council is going to be called involving them, it might be a good idea to make sure they go into it as a united front, lest decisions about their fate be made for them.

NOTES

Joint log: Since this camp period won't be particularly long, everything will take place in a joint log. Players can post starters with prompts for others and tag into other players' prompts.

Post in actionspam format. Plots and mod-run events in the game are meant to be in actionspam format to keep a brisk pace.

Cursed Weapons/Powers: So they know about how they'll be treated: those with cursed weapons and dark powers will be tolerated by the Elves after entry. While they'll get the same general treatment, the Elves around them may at times seem uncomfortable. Those with cursed weapons will only be distrusted a little, as the weapons themselves will seem more suspicious than their bearers. Those with dark powers or some kind of dark nature (such as being a vampire, Necromancer mage, werewolf, etc.) will be treated with the greatest distrust.

Fairy Swaps: The Elves may be slightly alarmed by the Brugh fairy swaps but get over it easily. However, if the character swapped in is one of the "dark" characters, the swap might be extra cause for alarm. (A potential prompt idea).

Npcing: There will be two npc threads. The "Random Encounters" thread is for characters to have a totally random encounter with an npc. These npcs will be fellow travelers from lands beyond. While they can't give much information about the group's status as Chosen Ones (that will happen during the Council) they can provide info about events in the Wilderlands beyond that may come to affect the squad in their travels. The "Specific Requests" thread will be for more specific issues your character might want to discuss with the Elves. While they'll push any Chosen Ones discussion off to the Council, they're willing to discuss issues with the characters, like if they have questions about having received magic, about being bound to their weapons, etc. The Rivendell Elves have heard a lot of gossip from all over and can potentially provide info based on things they've heard.

Clothes: The group will not yet be fully equipped for their travels (that will happen upon leaving) but everyone will at least be given new clothes since theirs are dirty and sometimes torn. Characters without appropriate travel footwear will also be given light and sturdy boots that will somehow be in their size without their size being asked. They'll also be given basic toiletries like scissors that can be used to cut hair and beards. There are no razors, however, because the Elves don't need to shave so they don't keep them on hand.

[Revan locks the power switch to off and offers Herc the lightsaber if he wants to hold it. People seem to enjoy that, and Force knows it's the only use the things have seen in days.]

A lot of us have been weakened, a few of us considerably. We almost died in a fight that I would have finished in minutes at home.

[It's not arrogance if you really are that good, just ask her.]

-Oh how that word made her heart flutter, and she couldn't help beaming and blushing, leaning in close to the other woman.-

Twould be my honor, Agrias... -Oh how she sang that response...-

Yeah?

[He gives Alacruun a bit of a skeptical look, but something's hitting home.] She decided she was going to kill ghosts?

Well, I can say something about their ears. [He won't, because he's a good guest, and the elves have gained countless points in his esteem by removing the morgul splinters from his back. Towards the end of the trip there, he was pretty sure he would die, shivering and pale-lipped and in a stupor. He doesn't remember most of the last leg of the journey here.

But, esteem or not, Dixon wouldn't hesitate to turn on the elves for Trance. It's not that he's known her a long time; it's that his bonds of loyalty fix fast and tight, and she found him in a moment of ripe neediness.
]

Probably not. I could make myself useful, though. I could work in the kitchen or haul stuff around or... [There's a wistfulness to how Dixon says that, and a sadness. A sort of bone-deep sadness that doesn't reflect the relatively minor inconvenience of having to leave here at all. He doesn't know what he could offer the elves or offer anyone here.] I guess people couldn't leave me here even if they want to.

[He will take her up on that, surprised at how heavy it is given the size. Just turning it over in his hands doesn't reveal much to him though.]

Considerably is the word I'd use, yes. I'm not even a hundredth as strong as I should be.

[Still.]

It will be a wonder if I don't start aging again.

I've got paper, if you want. [Dixon's tucked into a corner of the balcony, smoking a cigarette, not visible from the outside but with a beautiful view of the sun as it starts to creep down towards the edge of the mountain.] And a pen.

[He gives her a glance, recognizing for the first time that she must be one of the new people, not an elf or a visiting dwarf or someone he's seen in the periphery but not met yet. It's then that he notices she already has a notebook, already has something to write with, and the baseline efforts he's made towards generosity are pointless. He feels a little stupid about it. A flush comes up his neck, under the burn scars that travel up to his face.]

You already got the download from the elves or you need someone to catch you up?

[He's been sitting here a while, as evidenced by how short his cigarette's gotten; he's kicked the habit of taking a few drags and tossing them ever since they became a rare commodity on this quest, and now burns them down until he's basically inhaling the air filter. The view from the balcony is spectacular, all the elven architecture arching and leaping over the waterfall, which roars away in the background.

He's a simple guy, and there aren't many pleasures simpler than a sunset.

[He is familiar with it. He's familiar enough that he really should be immune to its sting by now. He walks on over.

Before he actually takes a look at the stars, he manages to convince himself that it's actually going to look like the sky over Ebbing and that he's about to pull out a smidgen of enjoyable knowledge for them to have. It's not even like he's trying to impress her, he just wants to share something with her. He wants to have something to share.

Unfortunately, the sky's a splatter-painting of unharmonized, reckless stars and planets, and he's walked himself into a situation where he's got to admit he's clueless.
]

I think that one's Mars. [It's a straight-up lie, and he gives up about halfway through the sentence, as evidenced by how even the false confidence plummets into a meek wobble.] Nah, I got nothing.

[Oh god who let the human personification of a mountain in here. Rei takes a startled step backwards, watching him warily a moment. Was it safe to touch him? He...seemed real and alive, though he spoke a little like he stepped out of some historical play.

She looks down at her nightgown and makes a small noise of understanding and acceptance. Right. Better clothing--or at least shoes--should be a first priority here. A moment's hesitation more before she tentatively takes the offered hand.
]

...Thanks. If I'd known I'd be spirited away in my sleep like this, I would've at least worn pants to bed. [Her tone is dry and deadpan, but there's an unmistakable look of relief in her eyes. Yes please god lead her to clothes??]

[With full stomachs and renewed vigor, the two departed the Hall of Fire, with Agrias taking lead.

As they walked the halls, the knight and queen held each other's hands, occasionally looking at each other and smiling along the way. Agrias may not have been the type to purposely and openly declare her love, but she would not hide it, either.]

As our days continue to be full of change, with you and I embarking on this journey together, I know of but one of few constants.

[When they stopped, it was inside of one the many libraries.]

And it is of my love's fondness for books.

[That isn't a pose that suggests ease and contentedness. Phos pauses in the doorway to the balcony, unsure if they should intrude, but after a few moments they carefully step on over, nearly tiptoeing so as to not startle her. It doesn't really help much. Their footsteps clink noticeably on these stone floors no matter how softly they step.

Pausing again briefly beside the strange woman, they just...settle for crouching as well, wrapping golden arms around their bare knees.]

Are you okay? [A quick sweeping look finds no pointed ears and a body that's proportioned more like the humans than the squat dwarves, but they're still uncertain. New people keep showing up, and they keep losing track of which organics are part of their group and which are locals.] Did you just show up, or do you, like...live here?

[Rei glances up, startled, and after a moment she straightens to her feet as well. Her notebook hadn’t even passed her mind as a possible space to draw in, though she glances at it now as she remembers it’s there. It’s still not really the best to double as a sketchbook so—] I’ll take the paper, if you don’t mind giving it away.

[It’s a nice offer, after all, and she’d sort of feel bad to not take it. She leans her hip against the rail, arms crossing loosely over her chest as she takes in the scenery again.] Elves and dwarves— and probably bears. Oh my. [A deadpan wizard of Oz reference, but she doesn’t even laugh at her own joke.] I keep thinking I’ll wake up again and be back...

[Sunsets used to be nice to her, but lately it’s come with the promise of that nightmare, a dive into that manor and being attacked and stalked and everything else. The days had started blending together so much with no real way to know how much time was passing between the few hours she’d be awake.

It’s a bit of a relief for something different even if it was equally strange. Rei shakes her head to clear it before finally addressing the actual question.
] I’m still a little lost, honestly. It was a lot to take in at once. Any explanations you have will be more than what I’ve got now.

[The clinking noise doesn’t register to her right away as someone approaching. Vaguely she has a thought that it reminds her of chimes, but it isn’t until she sees the glint of something out of the corner of her eye and movement that it dawns on her that there IS someone. She doesn’t jump up, but she tenses and whips her head around to look the Phos, eyes widening in surprise.

Phos is certainly unique to see, after all; Rei can’t help but stare. Slowly she takes in the hair and the unnatural way light seems to glint off of it, the strange color of their skin (paper than even herself it seems), the gold arms... the words “Not Human?” Flash in her head like a beacon. But they don’t appear threatening, so after a bit Rei looks away again to jot down some quick notes in her notebook. Just observational, factual notes.
]

I’ve had better days. [She glances to the side at them again.] I'm not from around here. I’m going to assume you aren’t either? You don’t look like a native. [Just... just sayin’. Maybe a little too bluntly, but it was the truth!]
shipoftheseus: (100% okay seriously)

[personal profile] shipoftheseus 2018-06-16 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Phos frowns slightly at that pause to scribble down some notes, but then she's looking back at them and they can't help but offer a slight, awkward smile.]

Nope. I guess you're one of us, then?

[That should be a comforting thought, right? It is to them. Maybe they're especially weird in this group, but they're all still bound by that same state of being out of place here. And even at their most isolated moments, Phos has always been part of a group. They like thinking they're not entirely alone here.

After a moment, the smile fades again and they lean in a little, peering curiously at her notebook.]

What are you writing?
cursemarked: (❁ Will purify the place where I am)

[personal profile] cursemarked 2018-06-16 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[Rei pauses and then nods] I suppose I am. It seems if you're not an-- ELf or a dwarf, then you're probably someone spirited away to this place. There's more of us than I thought there might be, and nothing that seems to connect us.

[Nothing she can see, anyhow. She taps at her lower lip with her pencil; having only spoken to a couple people and having not really delved into everyone's past lives and all, she can't say for certainty if there is or isn't some kind of connection. But on the surface it doesn't appear so. And it doesn't look like this is any continuation of her curse or anything either...

Her gaze slides sideways when she notices Phos trying to take a peek and her lips purse, but there's nothing written on these pages that she'd care about them seeing, so she turns it towards them. On the page is just listed a few things: That Phos is thin, their hair and eye color, how pale they are, the gold arms. The word 'human' with a question mark. Rei's written that they approached her first and that they seem friendly.
]

Notes. I try to write down everything so I can refer to it later. [The notebook seems well-used already, and has little tabs dividing it into four parts: Incidents, Locations, People, Articles.]

Fine, but only if you say it where their ears can't hear you. [Never let it be said that Trance is above petty gossip. When you've lived long enough, what's left that isn't petty?

There have been times in her history that Trance may have taken advantage of that loyalty. Luckily, those times are long past. She never did find the pleasure in it that some of her people do, but that doesn't mean she can't see why they do it. Or find it useful from time to time. She's just come to realize that even beings whose lives are here and gone in a blink of an eye deserve to, well, live.

It was something of a shocking realization when she first made it.

Dixon didn't seem to want to stop her from looking before, so she idly glances over the rest of his discarded drawings as they talk. She won't comment on them being cute again, but she still thinks they are. Childish, maybe, but that's not necessarily bad. Just. Cute. And it gives her something to look at that isn't him. People usually feel more comfortable talking about things like this when she doesn't look like she's listening as closely as she is.]

Do you really want to stay that badly?

[It's okay. She's used to being a bit of an oddity. She stops in her tracks as soon as Rei steps back, her smile turning a bit sheepish.] Didn't mean to startle you. Sorry.

[Well, that answers one question, at least.] Did you do the whole impossible magic tunnel thing, too? This is Rivendell! It's really nice, but the whole thing is kind of complicated. You're probably not dead, though, so you're right about that.

[Not the most helpful, but she's trying. Sort of.]

I wouldn’t. I’ve got manners. [Ones he’s happy to abandon generally, but the difference between rough and rude tends to fall along the lines of if someone knows better and chooses to break mores anyway, and Dixon falls more along the latter. And he is appreciative to the elves, just protective of the others. The welcome has been warm
and vital, just the culture shock a little discouraging to navigate.

He takes a moment to think about that, to try and work out his answer. He’s glad she looks at something else, because he always assumes people are looking at the burns and doesn’t like to think things out in front of others. Like them watching will make words harder.
]

There’s just nowhere else that I’d particularly want to be. [A part of him will always yearn for home, for the one bedroom house with the yard and the porch looking out onto a quiet street, but he knows he can’t go back there. All that’s left for him is his momma and his unemployment and the forty thousand in medical bills he left her with, the damage he’s done to her life. And he doesn’t have the imagination to dream of anywhere else.]

It’s just that questing - I don’t know, maybe you’re used to it. Did you start out used to it or do you eventually get over a learning curve?

[How is it that this woman's relationship with the Immaterium is so peaceful, so full of understanding? Had she embraced it wholly? Perhaps those of Chaos felt like this instead, so submerged in its depths it wrapped around to the other side? Mita wanted this. She desperately wanted this.]

[At this point Kal is on the verge of a fit of laughter, really. Part of it is the beer, part of it is that he just mentioned the Augean stables like it’s nothing… but it’s mostly that Herc is just a damn good storyteller, even the dwarves seem to be entranced. Not that seems to be a difficult ordeal, they seem to be willing to listen to anyone who will give them fun stories but Herc also seems a natural at captivating his audience.

Kal grins at the question, quick to ease:]

Granted he didn’t know he was an alien when he stared at the stars for hours at the time back in his parent’s farm, sitting on the roof because he didn’t really need to sleep all that much. But he always found himself… drawn to them, drawn to the constellations, to the stars and the black holes, to the planets and the galaxies and just space, in general and the idea that there was so much more out there than what they could see.]

[Kal doesn’t say anything to that statement, but he does hum in agreement. Whoever is bringing them here, as non-specific as their reasons for it may be to them yet, has to have a pattern for it. And so far it seems to be focusing on younger people. Kal doesn’t know why, and for all he knows it could be a coincidence, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to be happy about it.

And if it helps ]

I’m sorry. But I’m glad we got here in time for you to get heal, from what I heard being hurt with those blades… [He grimaces.] It could be pretty nasty.

But of course, what do you want to know?

Huh.

[They don't really have much to contribute on the first subject, unfortunately. They've thought about it, but they're dumb and certainly not likely to come up with any explanations faster than Brainy or anyone.

But the notes are interesting, in a way that's probably maybe a little vain. Well, they do stand out quite a bit. Of course that would be noteworthy. They poke at her notes with a gold finger, specifically the "human?" part.]

Well, I'm definitely not human, so you can fix that.

[They make a face as they say it, and their tone is definitely good-humored, but the combination seems to suggest an implicit "gross" that they're just being nice enough to not say directly.]
