THE LAST HOMELY HOUSE ※ RIVENDELL ※ LOG 2

THE LAST HOMELY HOUSE

OOC POST

The group is told to take a week of rest in the Last Homely House as the injured and sick among them heal. The Elves promise them that at the end of that week, there will be a great Council, with representatives of several peoples in attendance.

Until then, they can wander the peaceful halls of Rivendell, which are filled with travelers from all over the Wilderlands who are making a rest stop while they travel through the lands of Middle-Earth.

The most notable part of Rivendell is the Hall of Fire, a great feast hall where people can eat, drink, and be merry. This is the great social hall of Rivendell, where the Elves and their visitors share news of lands far beyond, tell stories, or perform music. The music here almost sounds divine, especially when the Elves sing and play, but they're just as eager to hear songs from other lands, so if any of the squad decide to share, they'll be glad to listen.

Some of the hall's guests are a touch more lively than the others, like a party of dwarves staying at Rivendell. Their stories are a mite more adventurous and if you get in their good graces, they might be willing to share some of the beer they brought with them. Listening to their stories or their talk about their craftmanship is a way to get into their good graces.

The Elves love learning, so there are libraries the group is allowed to browse, though they mostly only contain tales of Middle-Earth (for now), though the Elves seem to be collecting what books about other lands they can. These libraries often have viewing stations with telescopes pointing at the sky. The Elves have been almost delighted by the changing skies, enjoying the challenge of trying to understand how the sky has been knitting itself together with the addition of new worlds.

There are also beautiful balconies here, overlooking the gorge and the waters below, and terraced gardens filled with flowers, bushes, and flowering trees. Their rooms are open to the outdoors and have beds that seem grown into the shape of bed-frames instead of carved. The bathrooms actually have running water. The Elves have figured out how to direct the clean running waters of the gorge in primitive indoor plumbing. Water for hot baths has to be heated first in brass cauldrons over coal braziers before getting dumped into the bath.

It's time for the squad to rest, eat, and regroup. If a great Council is going to be called involving them, it might be a good idea to make sure they go into it as a united front, lest decisions about their fate be made for them.

NOTES

Joint log: Since this camp period won't be particularly long, everything will take place in a joint log. Players can post starters with prompts for others and tag into other players' prompts.

Post in actionspam format. Plots and mod-run events in the game are meant to be in actionspam format to keep a brisk pace.

Cursed Weapons/Powers: So they know about how they'll be treated: those with cursed weapons and dark powers will be tolerated by the Elves after entry. While they'll get the same general treatment, the Elves around them may at times seem uncomfortable. Those with cursed weapons will only be distrusted a little, as the weapons themselves will seem more suspicious than their bearers. Those with dark powers or some kind of dark nature (such as being a vampire, Necromancer mage, werewolf, etc.) will be treated with the greatest distrust.

Fairy Swaps: The Elves may be slightly alarmed by the Brugh fairy swaps but get over it easily. However, if the character swapped in is one of the "dark" characters, the swap might be extra cause for alarm. (A potential prompt idea).

Npcing: There will be two npc threads. The "Random Encounters" thread is for characters to have a totally random encounter with an npc. These npcs will be fellow travelers from lands beyond. While they can't give much information about the group's status as Chosen Ones (that will happen during the Council) they can provide info about events in the Wilderlands beyond that may come to affect the squad in their travels. The "Specific Requests" thread will be for more specific issues your character might want to discuss with the Elves. While they'll push any Chosen Ones discussion off to the Council, they're willing to discuss issues with the characters, like if they have questions about having received magic, about being bound to their weapons, etc. The Rivendell Elves have heard a lot of gossip from all over and can potentially provide info based on things they've heard.

Clothes: The group will not yet be fully equipped for their travels (that will happen upon leaving) but everyone will at least be given new clothes since theirs are dirty and sometimes torn. Characters without appropriate travel footwear will also be given light and sturdy boots that will somehow be in their size without their size being asked. They'll also be given basic toiletries like scissors that can be used to cut hair and beards. There are no razors, however, because the Elves don't need to shave so they don't keep them on hand.

Reserved?

[Revan supplies a nice, value-neutral word, because certainly Dixon doesn't think poorly of their hosts or anything so gauche as that.]

Give them experience recovering from falls.

[Why yes, she is grinning with a feral edge at the thought of tossing around other party members.]

Yes, and taking them.

[Oh dear. That's a good look on her.]

Which one's gotten under your skin?
awfulcer: (Basic - Maestro)

[personal profile] awfulcer 2018-06-09 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. [He makes a little finger-gun gesture at her.] That.

[He just gave Loken a big lecture on not being a dick to the hosts; he's going to try and live by that, no matter how many fifty-dollar words and stares down their nose they give him.

He gestures towards her telescope.
]

Looking for home?

[Dixon follows along, absorbing less the individual traits Hiccup's naming than the clear admiration and love Hiccup had for his father. Sometimes it's good to just let people talk it out. Dixon doesn't really talk out grief, and as Hiccup's description reminds him of both Chief and of his own deceased father, he feels his throat getting tight. He loosens it back up with another sip of beer.

A sip, not a swig, because he's polite when someone's talking about a dead parent. You don't fucking chug.
]

You're right. He sounds like a great guy. [He pauses. His own eyes have remained teary.] Probably where you get your good qualities from.

I don't think they'll be surprised. Technically we're their saviors, but that doesn't mean they have an obligation to help beyond the minimum.

[She's expecting them to do the bare minimum of helping them and tell them what to do, and then send them their merry way]

The Jedi Order...? [It sounds familiar in some vague way -- most likely because there may be an off-brand Star Wars series in her world. I mean, it's the world that has Harry the Potato] Are you a knight of some sort?
followingdawn: the get the pancakes out of my jacket ([por] hey remind me)

[personal profile] followingdawn 2018-06-09 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

[ Zero shame! In fact, he looks like he might be daring anyone to criticize him for it. ]
awfulcer: (Basic - 'Scuse Me?)

[personal profile] awfulcer 2018-06-09 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Dixon's not criticizing, he's correcting. Kind of. He hopes.]

Well, you don't need to here. If anyone gives you trouble for taking food the whole squad will kick their ass. Plus, it's a bad thing to turn into a habit if you don't need it.
shipoftheseus: (sensei stop lying)

[personal profile] shipoftheseus 2018-06-10 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's a poor explanation for someone from the Gems' isolated little culture, where materials and supplies and the things people make are limited and precious. Even with things that aren't strictly necessary and might get damaged anyway, like their uniforms, Phos couldn't imagine just tearing them up needlessly. That's too cruel to the people who put time and effort into making them and those who gathered the raw materials in the first place and those who could have used it for something else.]

Even if they were just...fake people or whatever, why do you have to break things for no reason? It's mean, and wasteful.
followingdawn: a tad unrealistic if you ask me... i mean a ginger kid with 2 friends? ([por] i finally watched harry potter)

[personal profile] followingdawn 2018-06-10 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've always needed it.

[ Very bluntly. If you wanted to stop a bad habit from forming, you're about thirteen years too late, Dixon. ]

[The traveler she approaches is a girl of about 17 or 18. With her overlarge, sensible boots and simple, homespun dress, this visitor is from a place far less fanciful than the Elvish estate she's come to. By the calluses on her hands and the unsmiling intensity of her stare, which seems to see a little too much of whatever she's looking at, she's as hardworking a farmgirl as there ever was, but far harder thinking than most.

By the pointy black hat, she's also very clearly a witch.

She spots Ange on her way over and sizes her up with that too-focused gaze, waiting as the other girl completes her approach.]

You want something.

[It's not spoken rudely. She states it as the fact it is, without making any promise she can give this traveler whatever they've approached her seeking. It's the greeting of someone who would like to see the other get to their point, and be quick about it.

Tiffany Aching has never been one for small talk.]

[If only Ange still had her entire fortune here...money makes people talk, and she doesn't mind literally giving fat bunches of cash if it helps her plans. Ange hates the money she inherited, but right now she wishes she had some of it.

Well, more like its equivalent in this world's currency.

Still! This is worth a try]

I won't beat around the bush: recently my group suffered an attack I don't feel like describing, and it was an ordeal many of us don't want to repeat.

What are the most dangerous areas nearby?

[She's pretty sure they'll have to go through them because life isn't fair and because saving the world involves going headfirst into danger, but having a heads-up would be so useful]
andaway: (M5P1DPL)

[personal profile] andaway 2018-06-10 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
And I wouldn't expect them to.

[Kal doesn't distrust people, on the contrary hoping for the best in people is how he gets through. But that doesn't mean he's going to expect to have everything being handed to them, especially when the worlds keep on changing so fast it's hard to catch up.]

But they have been as helpful as they can be so far, and they've allowed us to wander free around their place. They've feed us, they've healed us, given us clothes... I'd argue they are already doing more than 'the minimum'.
andaway: (3377569 (1))

[personal profile] andaway 2018-06-10 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say I have, no.

[He reaches for one of the mugs, giving his thanks to the dwarf that offered it. He tells himself he's not going to drink too much, he doesn't have his powers so it's actually possible for him to get drunk now. And while that would be potentially fun to see for everyone else, he definitely doesn't want to go through that.

Still, it'd be rude to not drink at least some, wouldn't it?]

A friend of yours?

[Clark’s always needed to something with his hands at all times as well, so he doesn’t even think twice about Dixon doing the same. He’s mostly just amused at the doodles, a grin on his face.]

I may not have my powers with me, but the suit is still made out of pretty durable stuff. It will take more than a few spells to rip them. [His mom made that suit for him, it’s definitely staying with him even if it does have a few scratches here and there. But he does need another set of clothes at some point.]

Were you hurt during the battle? [He seems okay, but the elves probably did a whole lot of healing just like they did on Kal.]

Something has torn the fabric of the universe apart and we're dealing with the after-affects.

I never thought I'd be in this line of work, but I suppose crisis makes interesting bedfellows.

I'm afraid "gunpowder" is a new concept.

[ Alacruun smiles. ]

Well, we all have to look out for one another, don't we? It wwould be ridiculous if we let our allies simply perish...
awfulcer: (Sad - Let Me Google That)

[personal profile] awfulcer 2018-06-10 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[He nods.]

I got mangled pretty bad. Knife to the back. The elves just took pieces of it out when I got here. [He taps the tip of his pen against his lower lip, then his teeth, looking disconcerted. There's a flicker of twin emotions through him, guilt and anger, the two in their usual lockstep.]

I was most worried about some of the teenagers. I was too slow to help a few of them. [He chews the corner of his tongue, sighs and starts scribbling again.] But I guess we all made it out alive, and that's all anyone can ask for.
awfulcer: (Basic - Glance)

[personal profile] awfulcer 2018-06-10 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Smooth, Alacruun, putting Dixon back on the defense like that, making him explain something he knows the name but not the actual mechanics of.]

It's like pieces of charcoal that explode. [That's as good as he's got.

He nods. When it comes to the cohesion of the group, he's a true believer. He took that knife to the back protecting a guy he'd been in a fistfight with the week before.
] We're a unit. If we don't have each other's backs we don't have shit.
awfulcer: (Basic - Eyebrow Raise)

[personal profile] awfulcer 2018-06-10 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
But you don't now. At least not here.

[It's suddenly become Very Important to Dixon that Sothe know not to do this. Ingrained impulse, probably, residue from being trained up to bully people into following ordinances and codes that have no meaning here.]
awfulcer: (Angry - What's the Matter with You?)

[personal profile] awfulcer 2018-06-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Why's that any of your business? If they weren't your statues you've got no claim on them. [Somewhere, deep down, Dixon realizes that this whole argument is ridiculous, that they're still litigating over the right to kick a broken statue from weeks and weeks ago, but he's caught up in it. The contents of that first interaction have had plenty of time to foment and fester.

He also realizes he didn't actually answer Phos' question, he deflected it. There's just no real way to pretty up the caveman logic of "breaking things feels good", and despite the fact that it's true, Dixon's not going to cop to it in front of this weird Reed Richards girly punk twerp.
]

And you can't be mean to something that's a thing, and you can't be wasteful with junk.
wildernpcs: (witches - Tiffany Aching)

[personal profile] wildernpcs 2018-06-11 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
[It's almost the right question. Tiffany knows what the girl is asking, really, she's asking for the safest passage on their aimless journey. But those aren't the words that came out of her mouth.]

This is one.

[The bushes, as if on cue, rustle suddenly just behind Ange. A stifled cry of something that sounds like 'Crivens!' issues from somewhere very, very close to the ground.]

If your goal is to avoid danger, then you'd best stay here, where the danger is probably on your side.

[Probably.]

Is that your goal?
theincredibleherc: (Big Grin)

[personal profile] theincredibleherc 2018-06-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
[The rudest.]

You could say that. Hulk is a being that grows stronger as he grows angry. Strong enough to make even a man as mighty as myself concerned when he loses control. He's generally heroic, but there are times when he's too far gone.

[That's just the setup though.]

The story begins when he and I were traveling through the realms surrounding Asgard, a craggy land rife with troll dens and jotun that had been left behind to raid outlying farms. Our companion, the mighty Thor, had been waylaid in Midgard and Skyfather Odin had enlisted us in his son's stead to go and treat with one of the troll chieftains. As you might imagine, trolls are hideous things, but this foul beast was well known for not only his appearance, but his stench.

[A dwarf guffaws.]

And the report was accurate. As we neared it's den, we were forced to cover our noses with cloth, lest we choke on the beast's reek. Tell me, what is the foulest odor you've ever smelled?

[personal profile] unsealthecatbox 2018-06-11 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately our circumstances won't let us stay here for an extended period of time, as desirable as that would be. We'll have to move out of here at some point in the near future. I'd say...our goal is to move without encountering anything that could be deadly and we can't deal with by ourselves.

We're a sizable group, and some of us are capable of defending and fighting back, but I don't believe luck will be on our side forever.

[Ange's not sure how much she should say about their worldsaving duties. She still remembers there's at least one dark faction looking to capture and/or get rid of them, and in her ever calculating manner she decided they'd spy on them in some wa...possibly by using travelers from outside Rivendell to watch them or grill travelers for information later.

Maybe Ange is being too cautious, yep]
